My dog aged 3, a female golden retriever, limped (one month ago) after heavy running or exercises.  After having X-ray, the Vet diagnossed her having arthritis at the eblows where small bone pinches out.  She has just completed the cartrophen course (4 injections).  She is taking Omega 3, Glucosamine & Chrodrontin Supplements.  Would like to know :

a) She is now weighted 29 kg.  Is she a bit fat?   Do we need to further reduce her weight?

b) Sometimes, we give her some ribs or bones to chew.   Since she has arthritis, should we stop giving her ribs/bones to avoid her taking in more / excess calcium?  In fact, would excess calcium aggravate her arthritis problem?

c) Except for small & big business, we restrict her walk and activity i.e. no more running for over one month.  Thus, she has accumulated a lot of energy.  Sometimes, she runs at home like a horse.  What we should do to release her energy?  Should we allow her to run some time?  She is now only 3, we worry very much her arthritis as she carries it for the rest of her life?

d) Apart from taking glucosamine & chrodrontin, what other food supplements can be used to relieve her arthritis pain?

Your advice please.

Daisy

Dear Daisy,

a) I can’t judge this without seeing the dog. 29kg for a larger type GR is not overweight, but is for a smaller type!
b)The calcium will make no difference – but make sure bones are RAW
c) Swimming is a good form of exercise to burn off energy and not hurt the joints
d) Consider Hills J/D diet which is specific for joints
